Deadline

Deadline: October 15, 2008. Applications submitted via the Internet must be submitted by midnight (EDT), October 15, 2008. Applications submitted by post must be postmarked by the deadline. This deadline also applies to all electronic and/or paper references/approvals submitted on your behalf.

Eligibility Requirements

Elementary through four-year college teachers and school administrators are eligible to apply for positions abroad. However, not all categories of applicants are eligible for all countries. Please see the Teacher Exchanges & Summer Seminars and/or Administrator Exchanges section of our website for country specific eligibility requirements.

To meet the basic eligibility requirements of the program, an applicant must meet all of the following seven requirements. Failure to meet any one of the requirements makes a candidate ineligible. At the time of application, a candidate must:
Checkmark

be a U.S. citizen;

Checkmark

hold a valid U.S. passport (or be in the process of obtaining one);

Checkmark

be fluent in English;

Checkmark

hold at least a Bachelor's degree;

Checkmark

have a current full-time teaching or administrative assignment in the U.S. or one of its territories;

Checkmark

be in at least the third year of full-time teaching or administration (teachers applying to the seminar only need to be in their second full year); and

Checkmark

have not received more than the lifetime limit of two Fulbright grants (Eight weeks or more = 1 grant; Eight weeks or less = 1/2 grant).

For the purpose of determining eligibility, "full-time" refers to applicants who are currently employed full-time by a single institution (school, school district, or college). Teachers or administrators who hold a combination of part-time jobs which may add up to a full-time equivalent are not eligible.

All applicants should read the Teacher Exchanges & Summer Seminars and/or Administrator Exchanges section of our website before applying. These sections contain information on specific requirements for placement in each country. Please note whether or not your country of interest requires particular subject fields, grade levels, or foreign language fluency for eligibility. Applicants must be currently teaching the subject/level indicated by their country of interest. Applicants who are not currently teaching the indicated subject/level of their country of interest should make another country choice. Applicants may not choose countries that are not listed in the Teacher Exchanges & Summer Seminars or Administrator Exchanges section.

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, age, sex, or national origin and encourages the applications of members of minority communities. In keeping with the Federal government's ongoing efforts to ensure that its programs reflect the ethnic diversity of the United States, the Teacher Exchange Branch welcomes the opportunity to promote the appreciation and understanding of a multicultural America just as the Fulbright Program promotes the appreciation and understanding of a multicultural world.

NOTE: Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program suggests that all applicants (and accompanying spouses/dependents) begin applying for a new passport or renewing an old passport at the same time you submit your Fulbright Teacher Exchange application. Passport processing times have dramatically increased and the current wait for a new passport can be as long as 12 weeks. If an applicant (or accompanying spouse/dependent) does not have a valid passport before the time of Fulbright selection (Spring) this could result in cancellation of an exchange.

Application Options

You have two options for applying to the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program:

  1. You may use the online application feature of this website and submit your application (including all references and other required forms) directly over the Internet.
  2. You may download a paper version of the application and other required forms and submit them by post.

Each option has a separate set of instructions. Please make sure that you are using the appropriate instructions for the option you have selected. Fulbright prefers that you do not mix options. If you choose to submit an application over the Internet, please submit all of your forms via Internet also.

Reapplication for Teaching and Administrative Positions and Seminars Abroad

Reapplicants must submit a current application form in order to be considered for exchange. However, a reapplicant need not resubmit the two additional references nor the essay (provided those on file were submitted within the past three years). Reapplicants will be advised if additional data or interviews are necessary.

A Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program applicant who has previously received a Fulbright grant of more than eight weeks must wait four years after completing the grant to reapply, so that there is a period of five years between grants (for example, if you completed a grant of longer than eight weeks in 2004 or earlier you would be eligible to apply for the 2009 program). An applicant who has previously received a Fulbright grant of less than eight weeks would be eligible to reapply for a grant one year after completion of a previous grant, so that there is a period of two years between grants. The maximum number of Fulbright grants of more than eight weeks shall not exceed two, with two programs of eight weeks or less counting as one grant for purposes of reapplication. Previous grants from other Fulbright programs do not disqualify a candidate from consideration for the program. However, the required waiting period between grants still applies. Two Fulbright grants may not be held simultaneously.

Reapplicants who have previously applied online may access their application by using the My Application link at the top of page. Reapplicants who have not previously applied online should register as a New User.

Please make sure you print out and read the online application instructions before reapplying especially make note of the section regarding Reapplication.
